MEMORANDUM

TO: TAMPA COMMITTEE FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES

FROM: ROB HAGAN, TECHNICAL WRITER

SUBJECT: DATA FLOW DIAGRAMS

DATE: 04/04/98

Attached to this memorandum are the data flow diagrams and the data repository definitions.

The diagrams attached to this memorandum contain how the user's interaction and data flow through the proposed system. The first diagram begins with the processes of the complete system and each diagram thereafter decomposes the system into its smaller components. The level-0 diagram displays all modules and how the user's query passes through them. The level-1 diagram focuses on the medal module and the processes taking place as the user's query passes through it. The level-2 diagram d isplays the process in the medal module in which the user query is processed and breaks it down.

These diagrams show exactly how the proposed system will handle the data passed into it and what it returns. The data repository definitions following the diagrams reference each data flow and data file.

If there is any concern to the flow of data throughout our proposed, please contact me at[email protected].

Data Repository Definitions

1) Query Data Flow

Description:

An inquiry submitted by a user of the system to find information supplied by the system. Users determine the complexity of this inquiry and the system returns the information to the user on the screen.

2) Processed Query Data Flow

Description:

A processed query is a query that has been sorted by the system so that exact information can be retrieved from the data store and presented to the user.

3) Specific Data Data Flow

Description:

Specific data is data that the user requested to have presented to them on the screen.

4) Query Result Data Flow

Description:

Specific data is organized and displayed to the user exactly how they requested it. Data from each of the data stores are combined to be sent to the user's screen.

5) Data of all Modules Data Flow

Description:

Raw data of all the data stores are sent to be organized before being presented on screen to the user.

6) Specific Query Data Flow

Description:

A query that has been separated and each individual inquiry is sent to the proper data store.

7) Athletic Data Data Flow

Description:

Specific data retrieved by a specific query concerning athletes is sent to be organized on the screen.

8) Event Data Data Flow

Description:

Specific data retrieved by a specific query concerning events is sent to be organized on the screen.

9) Historical Data Data Flow

Description:

Specific data retrieved by a specific query concerning historical data is sent to be organized on the screen.

10) Medal Data Data Flow

Description:

Specific data retrieved by a specific query concerning medals is sent to be organized on the screen.

11) Historical Database Data File

Description:

The historical database contains data concerning the historical Olympic games. It contains files that can be read, sound bytes, and MPEG movie files that can be viewed on the user's screen.

12) Event Database Data File

Description:

The event database contains data pertaining to the Olympic athletic events. The data concerns when and where events are, winners and losers of the events, and the finishing times or scores of the events.

13) Athlete Database Data File
